Against Canberra prices

Supply only is the fair comparison with a landed price; installed prices include labour, which you pay either way.

No Canberra per-lm source. WTD index puts Canberra about 10% above Brisbane.

The local supply-only figure is worked out from published per-metre cabinetry rates, not a single quote, so treat it as a guide.

Local priceRange, inc GST
Joinery supply only, made and delivered (national, worked from per-metre rates)$20,000 to $33,000
Kitchen renovations installed, Canberra, budget to upper mid-range$13,200 to $49,500
Premium kitchen renovation installed, national$45,000 to $80,000

Is it worth it?

Yes, on the numbers we have. About $17,808 landed against $20,000 to $33,000 for local joinery, supply only, so roughly $2,192 to $15,192 less, before you add the benchtops, tapware and anything else that rides in the same shipment for far less than it would on its own. Estimate.

The Canberra market

Canberra is the second dearest city after Sydney, about 10 percent above Brisbane on the cost index: kitchens $13,200 to $49,500 installed, bathrooms $11,000 to $38,500. Amber Tiles prices its ACT zone about 8 percent above Sydney. Much of what Canberra buys is trucked in from Sydney already, so the extra truck leg on a landed order is a cost the local supply chain carries too.

How it gets to Canberra

Foshan factory to Nansha, Shekou or Yantian, a direct service to Port Botany, then about 300 km by road to Canberra.

Canberra has no port. Goods land at Port Botany in Sydney and come down the Hume and Federal Highways.

Most Canberra deliveries come as a tautliner load from a Sydney depot. A whole-house order can come as a container on a B-double route; ask what your street will take.

What moves the number

  • Door finish. 2-pac and timber veneer cost more than a decorative board, at the factory and here.
  • Volume. Pieces over 1 metre come flat-packed, which can halve the shipped volume. Freight is charged on cubic metres.
  • What it travels with. A kitchen on its own pays a whole set of port, broker and delivery charges. In a whole-house container it shares them.
  • Hardware. Name the hinge and runner brand on the quote (Blum or Hettich). Unnamed hardware is where a cheap quote gets cheap.
  • Benchtops are a separate line. See stone benchtops.

What it has to comply with

  • Board: E0 or E1 formaldehyde emission, with the test report for the batch.
  • Timber products: as the importer you run illegal logging due diligence and answer the community protection question on the import declaration.

Notes for Canberra

Cold winters, frost and dry heat in summer. Ask for timber and veneer that has been conditioned for low humidity, and check door and window glazing against your energy rating.

  • Canberra carries the longest truck leg of any capital on this page. Cartage is the line to watch.
  • Most Canberra fit-outs come from the Sydney side, so a Sydney container run is the benchmark for timing.
  • ACT building and plumbing work is licensed through Access Canberra. Imported WaterMark and RCM products are installed by a licensed trade, the same as local ones.

Questions

Does the kitchen come assembled?

Usually not all of it. Factories commonly ship cabinets under about 1 metre assembled and flat-pack the larger ones to cut freight. Every piece is labelled to the shop drawing so your installer can put it together on site.

How long does a kitchen take?

Typically 12 to 16 weeks from signing off the shop drawings to the container leaving, then the sea leg and clearance. Allow extra around Chinese New Year, when factories close for several weeks.

Why does it cost more in Canberra than in Sydney?

The sea freight, port and border charges are the same. The difference is the truck: about 300 km from Port Botany. In Sydney the same kitchen is about $17,530; in Canberra it is about $17,808. Estimate.
