Shipped with a kitchen
On its own, a kitchen's stone benchtops pays the full set of fixed charges and Elje's minimum fees. Added to a kitchen in the same shipment it adds about $7,377 to the kitchen's landed price ($4,925 to $10,403), because the port, broker, delivery and Project Plan are already paid. Estimate.
Against Sydney prices
Supply only is the fair comparison with a landed price; installed prices include labour, which you pay either way.
SteepWood NSW per lm porcelain figure; Airtasker 2023 average. WTD: Sydney fabricators 15 to 20% above Brisbane and Adelaide.
Stone is the closest call on this site. Against local porcelain the saving is thin once install is added back; it is widest on natural marble and quartzite, and only when the stone ships with the kitchen.
| Local price | Range, inc GST |
|---|---|
| Natural stone, supply only, per m2 (one national guide, low confidence) | $650 to $2,500 per m2 |
| Porcelain or sintered, supplied and installed, per m2 (national) | $960 to $1,550 per m2 |
| Natural stone, supplied and installed, per m2 (national) | $600 to $2,500 per m2 |
| Porcelain or sintered, per lineal metre, Sydney | $900 to $1,400 per lm |
| All stone benchtops, average per m2, Sydney (2023) | $2,200 per m2 |
| Elje estimate, landed on its own, per m2 | about $1,576 |
| Elje estimate, landed with the kitchen, per m2 | about $1,054 |
Is it worth it?
Sometimes. For porcelain, local supply and install is close enough that the saving is thin. For natural marble and quartzite, shipped in the same crate run as the kitchen, the gap is real. Weigh it against the risk of cutting to drawings rather than a site template. Estimate.
The Sydney market
Sydney is the dearest of the eight cities: about 15 percent above Brisbane on the cost index, with kitchens $13,800 to $51,750 installed, bathrooms $11,500 to $40,250 and tiling labour $46 to $115 per m2. Plumbers charge about $92 to $230 an hour, and stone fabricators 15 to 20 percent more per metre than Brisbane or Adelaide. Amber Tiles' Sydney price zone is its cheapest, so tiles are the one line where Sydney shoppers start ahead.
How it gets to Sydney
Foshan factory to Nansha, Shekou or Yantian, a direct service to Port Botany, then the M5 or the M8 to the suburbs.
DP World, Patrick and Hutchison run container terminals at Port Botany, about 15 km south of the city.
Inner suburbs: depot unpack and a small truck. Outer suburbs and new estates in the west and north-west: a container at the kerb is usually fine.
| Origin ports | Nansha (Guangzhou), Shekou or Yantian (Shenzhen) |
| Arrives at | Port Botany |
| Sea leg, port to port | 14 to 30 days |
| Port to site | about 15 km |
| Delivery, own 20 ft container | $350 to $1,200 |
| Delivery, shared-container pallets | $216 to $720 |
What moves the number
- Material. Porcelain and sintered slabs are usually the cheapest per m2. Natural marble and quartzite cost more and vary by block.
- Cut to drawings. The factory cuts to your shop drawings, not to a template taken on site. The cabinets have to go in square and the drawings have to be exact.
- Edges and cut-outs. Mitred aprons, integrated sinks and waterfall ends add labour at the factory.
- Weight and breakage. Stone is heavy and fragile. It is crated, and insurance sits at the top of the range.
- What it travels with. Crated in the same shipment as the kitchen, stone only adds its own freight, not a second set of port charges.
What it has to comply with
- Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs have been banned from import and use in Australia since 2024 and 2025. Elje prices porcelain, sintered and natural stone only.
- Ask for the material test report. A slab sold as sintered or porcelain must not be resin-bound engineered stone.
- Natural stone worked: tariff 6802.91.00 (marble) or 6802.93.00 (granite), general duty 5 percent, Free from China with a certificate of origin.
| Product | Tariff | General duty | From China with a certificate of origin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain or sintered stone benchtop slab | 6907.21.90 | 5% | Free |
| Marble slab or benchtop, polished or worked | 6802.91.00 | 5% | Free |
| Granite slab or benchtop, polished or worked | 6802.93.00 | 5% | Free |
| Quartzite slab or benchtop, polished or worked | 6802.99.00 | 5% | Free |
Notes for Sydney
Temperate and humid on the coast. Moisture-resistant board in wet rooms is enough for most of Sydney.
- Sydney has the most local showrooms and the widest local price range, so the gap to landed varies more here than anywhere else.
- Terraces and inner-city streets rarely take a side-loader. Plan on depot unpacking and a smaller truck, and a council permit if anything stands in the street.
- Port Botany charges a per-container terminal access fee of about $225 to $233, like Brisbane and Melbourne. It is on the breakdown below, not hidden in the freight rate.
Questions
Is it safe to have stone cut in China without a site template?
It can be, but only with exact shop drawings and cabinets installed square. Many people ship the island top and long runs cut to size and leave splashbacks or tricky returns to a local fabricator.
Can I import engineered stone?
No. Australia has banned the import, manufacture, supply and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs. Porcelain, sintered stone without resin and natural stone are allowed.
Is freight to Sydney dearer than to other cities?
Hardly. Forwarders quote South China to the main Australian ports at much the same rate. What changes by city is the port charges, the transit time (14 to 30 days into Port Botany), the truck to your site and the local price you compare against.
